Colonial Beach Parent Teacher Association hosted their annual tree auction in conjunction with Colonial Beach Elementary School’s Winter Concert. Music teacher Benjamin Swanson directed kindergarten, 1st, 3rd, 5th, and 7th grade classes along with the Colonial Beach Children’s Chorus and Concert Band.
The annual event was wall to wall, standing room only as parents gathered to bid on trees in the silent auction and watch their little ones perform. The tree auction has become a tradition in CB where each grade level, and the School Board, works on a themed tree.
This year’s trees were themed with everything from snow day, which was covered in things to do on a snow day and hot chocolate, to a Grinch tree decorated with classic and new Grinch items.
Starting the concert were the kindergarten children singing “It Fell in the City” and a delightful song about mittens, “The Mitten Song.”
Songs for each grade focused on snow and winter with a focus on learning rhythms and patterns in the music. Swanson works with each class not only on singing, but also learning instruments. Everything from drums to recorders are used in his classes to help foster a love of music starting at an early age.
The Colonial Beach Children’s Chorus is made of up of elementary school children and meets after school. With fifteen members the choir covered “Somewhere in My Memory” from the movie Home Alone, a Hebrew classic “Artza Alinu” and “This Little Holiday Light of Mine.”
The concert band is made up mainly of children completely new to playing musical instruments. With the students only a couple months into playing, they all did a wonderful job performing, “Band on the Housetop” and “The Nutcracker.”’
In the Spring CBES will host a spring concert and another musical. All are encouraged to attend.
