An orange sign warns neighbors to “KEEP OUT” of Apartment 6A at 160 Wallace Street. This section of the structure has been condemned by Fire/Code officials after a woman drove her car through the building on Sunday morning.
According to Sheriff Smith, the incident occurred just after 10 a.m., when Judith Rustin came crashing through the first floor of the apartment building. “I’m not sure what caused her to do it,” said Smith. After the incident, Rustin fled the scene, later turning herself in to authorities where she was charged with Hit and Run.
Xavier Epps, a nearby neighbor was home during the crash. He says the apartment isn’t the only thing Rustin hit. “She backed up and hit a truck first,” recalls Epps. “Basically, we heard a big ‘boom.’” When Epps stepped outside, he saw Rustin and her car in the building.
Chief of Emergency Services, Mitch Paulette said that officials are taking precautions to ensure that no harm comes to the occupants of the surrounding apartments. They checked the structure around the crash, and it appears the rest of the building is stable.
This is an ongoing investigation.
