Boys embrace new season and coach

Victim of the weather conditions, the Rappahannock Varsity Soccer Team is looking past what they cannot control and looking forward to improving. This includes being led by their new head coach and former assistant Jordan Clary.

“I just want to come in and help the team,” said Clary. “I have a good relationship with all the players…I love soccer and its my passion.”

Brandon Gibbs celebrates a Rappahannock goal as the Middlesex goalie agonizes.

This season marks Clary’s second year at Rappahannock High and with the team. The difference for her this season is coaching all upperclassmen boys rather than girls on the JV basketball team.

“They are very respectful to me,” Clary said. “Going into I was very nervous about me and 18 boys.”

Clary is a native of New York and has enjoyed soccer since the age of three.

“I’m trying to bring a program up…and get the kids more excited about at a younger age,” Clary said.

As for her team this season, Clary said her top returners include seniors Brandon Gibbs, Brandon Vidra and last year’s all district selection Aaron Rock who will be the goalkeeper.

The team is loaded on seniors this including Brandon Harcum, Earvin Gray and Hector; they will be joined by juniors Felix Martinez, Kevin Adams, Isais Dominquez, Ethan Perez, and Fabian Lopez; sophomores Ernesto Cordova, Triston Sebra, Michael Gaines, Francisco Martinez and lobe freshman Brock Belfield.

Clary said she is not looking over one team and preaching to her boys to take “one game at a time.”

“I told them that we’ll be in it. The way we get out is mentally,” Clary added. “As long as we’re playing out game I’m not worried—it’s when we got to someone else’s level, not focusing and starting bickering with each other [that I do].”
