Rescheduled to March 13 at 5 p.m.
It has been quite some time since Rappahannock High School has had a parent-supported organization for its athletics program. But next week, an interest meeting will soon bring that desire to fruition.
On March 13 at the Rappahannock High School gymnasium, the first interest meeting will be held for the Rappahannock Raiders Booster Club beginning at 5 p.m.
“You do not have to have a child enrolled in the school system or athletic programs to be a member. This school administration is committed to bridging the gap between the community and the school system, this program is an excellent opportunity for that,” said spokesperson Kathy Clarke. “I encourage everyone to get involved so that together we can make our athletic programs the best that they can be.”
Clarke, a graduate of the high school, said the idea came about during a fundraiser in the fall season. As a result, students and community members expressed interest in having such an organization after a four-to-five-year hiatus.
The need has existed for quite a while. An already lean school-operating budget often leaves little or no funding for the athletic department and the various programs have basically been self-supported through the efforts of the coaches, staff, and a handful of parents,” Clarke said. “Instead of limiting our future efforts to only one team or sport, a Boosters Club can provide opportunities to support all of our teams and student athletes without putting the financial burden on the school or just a few individuals. It can strengthen ‘Raider pride’ in the school and our community.”
Clark said high school principal Jesse Boyd, has been very busy preparing for the upcoming meeting. At which time, those in attendance will vote on several matters including by-laws, officers and goals.
“There has been a very positive response from parents and the community at large. We are hoping for a large turnout at the first meeting,” Clarke said. “The Spirit Committee at B.H. Baird has already volunteered to donate the proceeds from their March 27th and 28th Bake Sale to the organization.”
