A new and exciting baseball and softball camp is coming later this summer. Running for quite a few days in Lancaster County, the camp will feature some standout college players and coaches from Richmond.

Beginning on July 29, the Youth Club of Lancaster County will be hosting the coaches and players from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) for the 2013 vcuSummer Slam Youth Baseball and Softball Camps at Dreamfields. The event will be led by assistant baseball coach Kurt Elbin, of VCU, and former Fauquier High softball standout Sarah Kleinfeltner for children between the ages of 7-12.

“We just want to provide a good experience in baseball,” Elbin said.

Damien Crissey, the new head football coach at Lancaster High, contacted his former high school teammate Elbin about running the camp. He was also thrilled about having Kleinfeltner, who played at George Mason, to run the softball camp.

“It’s just a great opportunity to exploit the facility we have in Dream Fields and make nice cost efficient camp for the youth in our area,” Crissey said.

Camp will be held each day from July 29 to Aug. 2 from 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. at Dreamfields.

Coaching activities are basic skill building; included hitting, fielding and base running. VCU Players will demonstrate and teach campers drills that VCU uses during their daily practices. There will also be scrimmages and individual position training.

On the softball side, Kleinfeltner will be instructing with throwing, defensive and hitting followed by competitions and games. Pending weather conditions kids will be taken to the pool in Lively or Kilmarnock YMCA.

Lunch will be provided at Dream Fields, but campers are asked to bring their own drink or water bottle.

Baseball campers will be picked up by the YMCA bus and transported to either the YMCA in Kilmarnock or the Lively Aquatic Center, depending on the weather. Campers will return to the YMCA in Kilmarnock by 4:30 p.m. each afternoon for pickup by 5 p.m.

Coordinators also announced they will have a two-day hitting and pitching camp for baseball  and softball players in grades 8-12 on July 30-31 each day from 6-8 p.m. for $30 at Dreamfields.
