Area schools received mixed results in federal accountability for the 2013-2014 school year.
According to both division leaders and school report cards released by the Virginia Dept. of Education (VDOE), eight of the 18 public schools in the Northern Neck and Essex County met all federal annual measurable objectives on assessments last academic year. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA), known since 2001 as No Child Left Behind, requires states to set Annual Measurable Objectives (AMOs) in order to increase student achievement.
According to the VDOE website, the Virginia Board of Education under its ESEA waiver application set up AMOs in reading and math for all students, three “proficiency gap groups” of students who traditionally under-perform academically and other subgroups.
