A ‘sought after’ employer 100 years later

Omega Protein has been running menhaden fishing operations from its site in Reedville for over 100 years, and it’s still an attractive employer.

“We experienced the largest turnout we have ever seen at our 2019 job fair. About 150 applicants attended,” said Ben Landry, director of public affairs. “A job at Omega Protein is a sought after position in the Northern Neck.”

There’s a robust local talent pool in the area, and “the Reedville location has the least employment challenges of all the Omega Protein operations,” he added. The company is attracting workers, including young people, without offering sign-on bonuses, additional perks or making changes to its payment and recruiting structures.

“There isn’t a lot of opportunity for good paying jobs with quality healthcare, and Omega is certainly one of them,” said Landry.

“If you work shore-side in the plant or the office, you have a 12-month position. If you work on the boats, it’s really only seven months. They get paid depending on how much fish they catch, so you can make a really year-long wage in seven months of work, and the other five months you can go do something else. And that in itself is pretty rare,” he said.
