Sumner and Thorne shot a 5-under par score of 67 to win by three shots over the second place team.
“Troy played fantastic for 18 holes, I played good for 13,” said Sumner.
The two also finished second in a MAPGA Southern Chapter Pro-Pro Tournament at Jefferson Lakeside Country Club in Richmond on April 29. There were 22 two-man teams competing. The duo shot -6 (65) and the winning team from Willow Oaks CC in Richmond shot -7 (64).
This past month, Sumner was also featured in the April issue of PGA Magazine [Volume 94 No. 4] for his program called Swinging Seniors in Callao designed to provide a six-week lesson for registrants 50 years and up. The program originally began in 2002 when Sumner received a three-year grant for $5,000 from the PGA Foundation.
“It’s been great. Half of my friends came out of the program,” Sumner said. “I just felt like this is something that can be done in many other places.”
The magazine can also be seen at www.pgamagazine.com where he discusses how he designed the program.
