Softball season heats up

On April 16, the Rappahannock Varsity Baseball Team started the week with a 10-0 shut out over Washington & Lee. This lead to the team’s third district win and a near perfect game for pitcher Carlie Clark allowing a single hit.

The senior allowed no walks through five innings and recorded 13 strikeouts.

At the plate, Kelsey Berhalter led the way going 2-3 and collecting an RBI; Hallie Berger followed going 2-4 collecting three RBIs and two runs; and Amanda Headley was 2-4 with a triple, collecting an RBI and a run.

The team had 11 hits total against W&L.

Two days later, Rappahannock entertained their rival Essex Trojans in Warsaw and defeated them 8-4.

On April 18, the defending tournament champion Essex Trojans were defeated the regular season champion Rappahannock Raiders 8-4 in their first meeting this season.

Hallie Berger was credited with the win pitching five innings allowing only one hit, no walks and striking out six batters. Clark pitched the first two innings allowing four hits, one walk and striking out four.

At the plate, Amanda Headley led Rappahannock with two RBI’s followed by single RBI’s from Hallie Berger going 2-3 with a run and Rhiannon Mulvena scoring a run. Kelsey Berhalter and Brandi Mulvena each had a hit with a run scored. Summer Saunders scored two runs followed by Katelin Hamilton and Olivia Gaulding each with one.

Essex was led at plate by Britney Owens going 2-3 with a double and a run. Single hitters Becky Jones followed with two RBI’s and a double, Savannah Wood with two runs including a home run and two RBI’s and Taylor Glass with a run scored.

Alexis Packett pitched four innings for Essex allowing nine walks and striking out six. Kallie Carson followed allowing two walks.

In a previous game that week, Essex’s Alexis Packett allowed only one hit in the team’s 10-0 shutout win over Lancaster to earn their first district win over the Lady Red Devils. This was their

second district win after defeating Northumberland in the opening week.

Lancaster’s Casey Clarke was the only Red Devil to manage a hit in the loss to Essex. Packett pitched five innings allowing only one hit to Clarke, six walks and collecting six strikeouts.

At the plate, Emily Broache earned two hits and two RBIs in the game, followed by single hitters Savannah Wood with a run, Katelyn Saunders with a double, Katie Parr with two runs and double, and Brittany Owens with two runs. Kallie Carson had a game high four RBI’s with a homerun, followed by Brionna Coleman, Becky Jones and Tavis Hundley each with a run scored. Jamie Thompson also collected two runs.

Lancaster allowed seven hits and gave up one walk. Brooke Hundall pitched for 5 1/3 innings allowing a walk and striking out one. Clarke came in for relief.
