Essex remains alive in playoffs
Four Northern Neck teams eliminated in quarterfinals
Only one Northern Neck District team remains after the first round of the state playoffs.
The Essex Trojans boys basketball team punched their ticket Saturday by defeating Dan River, 52-49, in Salem.
It was a heart-breaking weekend for four other Northern Neck teams as the Northumberland boys, the Northumberland girls, the Lancaster girls and the Colonial Beach girls all suffered first round losses.
On the first day of competition, the Lancaster girls team was eliminated by Clarke County 45-41 in the Division 2 Tournament, the Colonial Beach girls team was dropped by Altavista 56-23 in Division 1, and the Northumberland Boys team was defeated by William Monroe 74-44 in the Division 2. In the day to follow, the Northumberland Girls Team fell to George Mason 68-35 in the Division 2 Tournament, but it was Essex that prevailed over Dan River 52-49.
The Northern Neck District boys and girls basketball teams placed an impressive nine teams in regional play, and five teams advanced to the state playoffs. .
The Essex boys will now prepare for Radford the semifinals round at Siegel Center in Richmond on Thursday, March 7. Game begins at 7 p.m. If Essex wins again, they will play in the for the state championship at Siegel on March 9. The winner of the Essex/Radford game will face the winner of Gate City/Graham and William Monroe. The finals game begins at 5 p.m.
