Essex muscles into district playoffs
A late start to the season did not stop the Essex High Varsity Boys Basketball team from returning to the playoffs this season. In fact, the team is the third seed in the Northern Neck District Tournament and out rival Washington & Lee out of competition in the process.
Essex’s Alonzo Tompkins muscles his way past defenders from Washington & Lee in the team’s 73-59 victory to end the regular season.
This came in 73-59 victory giving Northumberland the final seed in the process.
In the last week of the regular season, Keith Bundy scored 15 points in the 58-32 road win over Rappahannock. The home team’s Marcus Byrd led with 14 points.
Essex’s Larry Hill chipped in with eight points followed by CJ Jones with six, D.J. Ashlock with seven, and Alex Balderson, Drew Balderson and Sterling Hammond with four each.
Rappahannock’s Tevin Fisher scored 11 points followed by DeShawn Thompson with four and Eamonn Collins with three.
But in their final head-to-head regular season game against soon-to-be regular season champion Colonial Beach, Essex fell for the second time, 44-42 on Feb. 6. Keane Foster led the team with 12 points along with Essex’s Alonzo Tompkins and Keith Bundy each tying for a game high with 16.
Colonial Beach’s Shamar Shanks scored eight points followed by Paris Muse with six, Ethan Harvin with five, Devonte Harris with four and Sidney Horton with two.
Essex’s Sterling Hammond had 10 rebounds to go along with five points followed by D.J. Ashlock with four and Alex Balderson with one.
