Winter is here but the Chesapeake Bay Garden Club is thinking spring. On a recent day before the cold weather arrived, members were out working with rakes and buckets as they prepared the daffodil display at Northumberland High School for its golden appearance in the spring.
At the monthly meeting on a very cold January 22nd the program given by member Liz Campbell featured local butterflies and moths. Her stated goal was to introduce members to a few species while listing their typical and more extreme adaptations so that “club members will be able to recognize by name the species she discussed.”
Angie Brack and Marcia Clark displayed recycled items brought in by members. Some of these items included bags made of men’s ties, a brass chandelier turned into a tiered serving station, a dishwasher flatware container used to store art supplies, an old metal tray repainted for continued use and Christmas cards recycled for use as next year’s package tags. These examples served as inspiration for members who are asked to think of how they could reuse what they already have instead of adding their unwanted items to the landfill.
Also on display were art pieces made of different fibers. These works were submitted from several Fiber Guild members for inclusion in the May 18th flower show that will be open to the public. Chesapeake Bay Garden Club members will interpret these and other fiber works with floral designs.
With the butterfly talk in mind the design theme was “Taking Flight,” a fixed design with implied motion. All entrants received a blue ribbon. These advanced designers were: Barbara Yinger (Best in Show), Joan Clements, Charlotte Spears, Patsy Sylvia, Rebecca Elston and Sharon Lemke.
Horticulture exhibitors also received blue ribbons. They were: Barbara Yinger (2 blue ribbons and Best in Show), Sharon Lemke (2 blue), Lien Groenwald (1 blue), Rebecca Elston (3 blue) and Joan Clements (4 blue).
