District season begins Jan. 3

The regular season in the Northern Neck District tips off this week as two teams vie to defend their titles and others look to knock them off. Beginning on Jan. 3, four schools will send their respective teams to open play as others will follow in the days to come.

Coming into the week, the Lancaster boys’ team has the highest winning percentage with a record of 9-1 and falling to King William, while Colonial Beach is riding a two-game winning streak to start the New Year.

Lancaster is followed by Northumberland with a record of 7-4, Rappahannock at 5-3, Colonial Beach at 6-4, Washington & Lee at 5-6 and the defending region champion Essex Trojans at 0-4. The Trojans have at least two weeks worth of games so far after most of the players were participating in the football playoffs.

On the girls’ side, the defending region champion Rappahannock girls’ team is on a winning streak of seven following a first week loss to Mathews and has the highest winning percentage in the district with a record of 7-1. Lancaster was knocked off the top spot during the holiday after dropping two games against AAA schools Meadowbrook and the other to Nansemond River.

Rappahannock is followed by Lancaster with a record of 10-2, Northumberland at 7-2, Colonial Beach at 8-3, Essex at 5-4, Washington & Lee at 2-9 and Essex Trojans at 0-4. The Trojans have at least two weeks worth of games so far after most of the players were participating in the football playoffs.

In JV action, Lancaster leads the boys’ teams in the district with an overall record of 9-0 and with a record of 5-3, Colonial Beach charges ahead with the highest winning percentage.

On Jan. 3, the girls’ basketball teams will begin with Colonial Beach at Rappahannock, and Northumberland at Washington & Lee.

The boys will begin on Jan. 4 with Rappahannock at Colonial Beach and Washington & Lee at Northumberland.

All JV games begin at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity at approximately at 7:30 p.m.

Essex’s boys’ and girls’ teams will tip off on Jan. 8 against Colonial Beach. The girls will host their game in Tappahannock, while the boys head to the high school closest to the Potomac River.

And Lancaster will suit up on Jan. 9 to play Washington & Lee. The Eagles will host the Red Devils in Montross while the ladies will play outside of the Town of Kilmarnock.

All JV games begin at 6 p.m. followed by the varsity at approximately at 7:30 p.m.
