Two games, two wins for Raiders second week
Rappahannock’s basketball teams had a great week with two wins each. This comes after both varsity teams defeated King & Queen and Windsor during the second week of the regular season.
For the boys’ varsity team, they defeated King & Queen 73-42 and then won in overtime at Windsor 72-66. DeShawn Thompson led the team in the win over King & Queen scoring 21 points followed by double digit scorers Kelvonte Ellis with 18 and Tevin Fisher with 10.
Tylek Sorrell scored eight points in the win followed Marcus Byrd with six, Eamonn Collins with five, JaQuan Thompson with four, Howard Plummer with three and Marcus Ball with two.
After a long trip to Windsor, Ellis emerged as the leading scorer with 19 points, to go along with 10 rebounds and five assists. Byrd also had a double-double with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
Fisher was the only other player to score in double digits with 12. Sorrell and JaQuan Thompson each scored eight followed by Collins with five and DaShawn Thompson with three.
The boys’ JV team also earned a win defeating King & Queen 43-23.
The girls’ varsity team joined the boys defeating their opponents as well such as King & Queen 49-13 and Windsor 53-28. In the win over King & Queen, Selene Epps had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds to lead the team. Epps was followed with Ashley Towles scoring eight points and collecting out four steals.
Kelsey Berhalter and Lasheonia Smith each scored six points, followed by Nakya Ward with five, Rhiannon Mulvena with four and Keshawna Veney with three.
Epps and Berhalter combined for 40 rebounds and 29 points to help lead the Raiders to their win over Windsor last Friday. Epps scored 15 points and collected 25 rebounds, while Berhalter had a career high 14 points to go along with 15 rebounds.
Towles chipped in with 11 points, followed by Veney with six, Smith with five and Lexi Hanks with two.
The girls’ JV team was off for the week.
