Christmas celebration offers a nostalgic look at past holidays
The Northumberland County Historical Society will offer its Christmas celebration and meeting on Sunday, Dec. 2 at 2:30 p.m. The program will feature vocalist, Ms. Suzy Long. In addition, Mrs. Nancy H. Clark will give the audience a nostalgic glimpse at “Christmases Past” in the Northern Neck. An afternoon of seasonal music and reminiscences of past celebrations promises to be a most enjoyable way to begin the holidays.
Long, a resident of the Northern Neck, will offer a selection of Christmas music. Her exquisite voice and talents as an actress are well-known by audiences throughout the area as she has performed in plays, musicals and recitals at such venues as the Center for the Arts and the Lancaster Players. Long has been singing from the time she could speak and is also an accomplished pianist. However, her talents are not limited to piano and voice. She is also skilled on the mandolin. Currently, she plays and sings in such groups as the Northern Neck Big Band, the Chesapeake Chorale and the Nouvelet Chamber Choir. In addition to performing, Long teaches piano and voice from her home in Wicomico Church. On Dec. 2, she will be accompanied by her sister and best friend, Beth Conley.
Nancy H. Clark will conclude the program with “Reminiscences from Christmases Past in the Northern Neck.” A lifelong resident of Lancaster County, Clark has very deep roots in the county. She was schooled at both Kilmarnock Elementary and St. Margaret’s before she began college at William and Mary and completed her studies at the Richmond Professional Institute. Her book, “Echoes in Ferryland,” discusses life and times in the 1930s, 1940s and 1950s in the region.
Refreshments will be served following the performance and presentation. Both Society members and the general public are welcome to attend this Christmas celebration, held at the Society’s Ball Memorial Library and Museum, 86 Back Street in Heathsville.
