Rappahannock High School sent a ladies’ volleyball team to regional and state competition starting last week. The ladies won the school’s first ever region championship last week, but saw their dreams of a championship end the following week.
On Nov. 13, Rappahannock hosted Region 1B runners-up Luray in the Group A Division 1 State Quarterfinals, but was defeated by the visitors 3-0 (25-10, 25-16 and 25-21).
To qualify for the tournament, Rappahannock won their respective region finals matches capping the week off winning the Region 1-A Championship on Nov. 9.
“This is a great thing,” said first year Rappahannock Coach William Campbell. “After losing the first game 25-8, coming back in the second and losing third 25-17, I can’t take a bit of credit for it. The girls did it all.”
Rappahannock’s Kelsey Berhalter celebrated not only her third regional women’s sports championship in 2012, but was also named the tournament’s MVP. She ended the night with 12 kills, five blocks and an ace.
“I think this year we had the most heart out of anything and we wanted it more than anybody else,” said Berhalter. “We just worked our butts off every day at practice to get this.”
Teammate Hallie Berger, who was named to the all-region second team, had four kills, nine assists and two aces on the night.
“Just being with the whole team has just built sportsmanship…and we’ve just come together when we were off at the end of the season,” said Berger. “I think now were coming back and hope this takes us a little further.”
Carlie Clark had four kills, 16 assists and had a perfect service on the night. Rhiannon Mulvena followed with five kills and three blocks, Brandi Mulvena had three aces, Lindsey Delano had two aces, and Rachel Berger had two kills, two saves and a block.
Rappahannock ends the season with an overall record of 15-5.
