Northumberland volleyball gets by Rappahannock to win district title

On Nov. 1, Rappahannock (13-4) and Northumberland (17-3) concluded the two-night 2012 district volleyball tournament with Northumberland winning 3-0 (20-25, 23-25 and 10-25) to earn the district tournament title.

 

Rappahannock's Carlie Clark and the Lady Raiders fell in the district tournament championship, 3-0, to Northumberland on Nov. 1.

Coming into the tournament, Northumberland and Rappahannock were ranked first and second in the district, respectively.  The two teams were also tied in the head-to-head match up after the season.

 

Both teams will advance to their respective Region A playoffs. This will be Rappahannock’s first regional appearance since 1996.

 

Following the championship, Lancaster’s Brooke Hudnall was named this year’s player of the year. She is joined on the All-District First Team by Essex’s Kaitlin Saunders and Savannah Wood; Northumberland’s Katie Crowther and Mary Kathryn Hall; and Rappahannock’s  Hallie Berger. Northumberland’s Bonnie Swann was named coach of the year.

 

Named to the All-District Second Team were Essex’s Gannah Gross; Lancaster’s Skylar Kellum; Northumberland’s Haley Headley; Rappahannock’s  Brandi Mulvena and Kelsey Berhalter; and Washington & Lee’s Tori Swann.

 

Volleyball teams will begin playing in the Region A finals  on Nov. 5. Third seeded Rappahannock will travel to second seeded Chincoteague for a 5 p.m. start in the division one playoffs. Then on the same night at Northumberland High School, the second seeded Lady Indians will host third seeded Windsor for a 6 p.m. game of the division two playoffs.

 

Should Rappahannock win, they will play the winner of game one between top seeded Appomattox Regional Governor’s School and fourth seeded Middlesex on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. The team seeded the highest will host. If Northumberland should win their match, they will play the winner of game one between top seeded Mathews and fourth seeded Nandua on Nov. 8 at 6 p.m. The team seeded the highest will also host in this case. Only the champions of each division will advance to the state tournament, which begins on Nov. 13, everyone else will be eliminated.

The following ladies were named to the All-Academic Team: Colonial Beach’s Rachel Allison McKenzie Conway, Kora Herrod, Brooke Payne and Meghan Seaman; Essex’s Kallie Carson, Tori Compton, Hannah Gross, Tiffany Harmon Becky Jones, Katie Parr, Kaitlin Saunders, Jamie Thompson and Savannah Wood; Lancaster’s Olivia Beck, Elaina Gainer, Carli Hanback, Brooke Hudnall, Lauren James Skylar Kellum and Laura Smith; Northumberland’s Katie Crowther, Rebecca Daniel, Mary Kathryn Hall, Sarah Haynie, Haley Headley, Summer Newsome Lauren Self and Sydney Setser; Rappahannock’s Xenna Belfield Hallie Berger, Kelsey Berhalter, Carlie Clark, Lindsey Delano, Amanda Headley, Brandi Mulvena and Hannah Park ; and Washington & Lee’s Haley Balderson, Zoe Davis, Amanda Grimm, Katie Perkins, Amanda Straughan, Tori Swann and Tamara Tate.
