Officials from Rappahannock High School Athletics and Richmond County Public Schools are joining together to complete the installation of a sprinkler system on the high school baseball field.
This is one of many projects to improve the facilities at Rappahannock High School, which has seen many years of postseason action and uses by the public.
“We’re just trying to get this project going first and the community support has been great so far. They’re excited about what we’re trying to do,” said Rappahannock Athletic Director Jerry Parrish.
He said the goal is to have the sprinkler system project, which is one of many, completed in a month’s time.
In addition to installing a sprinkler system at the baseball field, the football field is also on the list for improvement at the Rappahannock High School athletic facilities.
The task of creating a new softball field will be taken by the county, according to division superintendent James Smith. This field is expected to be located at the former Little League Park as additions are constructed to the high school infrastructure.
“People are attracted to programs when you have quality facilities,” said Smith. “When you offer facilities and these opportunities to students, they certainly grow. It’s important to these fans and their children to have something they can be proud of.”
Rappahannock Baseball Coach Larry Barker said he is looking forward to the project getting underway. He is hoping to get the baseball field to become the jewel of the region again.
“In the past people would come to use our facility, but unfortunately over the past few years the playing surface has not caught up with our success,” said Barker. “You are taking about a field that sees 50 games a year and that does not include all the practices.”
Baseball teams from Rappahannock Community College and Richmond County Little League are among the active users of the field.
“We’re really excited about having a top notch facility and top notch place to play,” Barker added.
Barker, his coaching staff and players are often found immediately after games, like many local teams, cleaning the field afterwards. He said hopefully with the upcoming sprinkler installation, this will be a help towards their efforts.
Checks can be made payable to Rappahannock High School and earmarked for the baseball field sprinkler system. Tax exempt number is 54-1142047. Contributions towards this project are tax deductible.
According to Parrish, the cost of the project is 9,870 for materials and labor.
