The regular season of high school volleyball in the Northern Neck is over and like many soap operas, the final day ended in dramatic fashion.

On Oct. 25, the defending district champion Northumberland Lady Indians won the regular season district title after some key plays,  defeating Lancaster 3-0.

Essex defeated Rappahannock 3-1.

With two district games left for all the teams, Northumberland and Rappahannock had identical records of 7-1, each falling to one another during the regular season.

Because Rappahannock lost both their first game last week to Lancaster, 3-2, Northumberland had the opportunity to separate themselves from the tie after they defeated Washington & Lee.

Two nights later, Rappahannock lost their second and final game of the regular season to Essex, 3-1.

At the same time, Northumberland defeated Lancaster 3-0.

The Northern Neck District Tournament was scheduled to begin on Oct. 30 at Northumberland High School.

Pending any rescheduling due to the recent  inclement weather, game one will feature fourth seeded Essex (10-7, 5-5) and top seeded Northumberland (13-3, 9-1) playing at 6 p.m. followed by game two with second seeded Rappahannock (12-3, 7-3) and third seeded Lancaster (13-5, 7-3) playing 30 minutes after game one ends.

Winners will advance to play in the championship on Nov. 1, same location, beginning at 6 p.m. with an awards ceremony following.

On Oct. 25, W&L (2-8) defeated Colonial Beach (0-10) 3-0.Neither team made the playoffs.

In JV action, Essex won the regular season district title after defeating Rappahannock 2-1.

On Oct. 25, both teams tied in the district with an 8-1 record.

Rappahannock was last year’s district regular season champion.

*Editor’s Update: Top seeded Northumberland defeated fourth seeded Essex 3-1 in the opening round of the Northern Neck District Finals. Second seeded Rappahannock followed with a 3-2 win over third seeded Lancaster. Rappahannock and Northumberland will play in the district championship on Nov. 1 at Northumberland High School. Game time is at 6 p.m.
