St. Margaret’s Head of School Margaret R. Broad has announced that she will be retiring at the end of the 2012-2013 school year. Broad has been the Head of St. Margaret’s School since 1989. She started her career at St. Margaret’s as a French teacher and was later promoted to Academic Dean. In 1989, Broad was selected by a search committee to be the 10th Head of School.
Under Broad’s leadership, St. Margaret’s school added seven faculty homes surrounding the campus, a Library/Learning Center, the Community/Technology center that houses a riverfront dining room, computer center and math and science classrooms. The McCuan House accommodates 24 students along with three faculty apartments. A new 42-acre Athletic Complex was created to house two playing fields, two softball diamonds, a cross-country track, a faculty residence, and maintenance and team buildings.
Among the programmatic changes that Broad implemented are the international program—one of the first of its kind—and the leadership program, which provides more than 50 leadership opportunities for St. Margaret’s students.
In her retirement letter, Broad wrote, “After nearly a quarter of a century as leader of this wonderful school, I look forward to spending this final year immersed in the life of the school: working with the Board and the school to continue the work we have begun while preparing for a smooth transition of leadership, hearing the laughter in the hallways, reciting the school prayer in chapel, mentoring senior leaders in class, knowing each girl and always seeking to live into our school motto: “As we grow in age, may we grow in grace.”
A search committee to find the next Head of St. Margaret’s School has been working together and finalists will visit campus in the coming weeks. These visits will include opportunities to meet the finalists.
Broad expresses appreciation for her faculty and staff, saying, “As my roles changed from French teacher to Academic Dean to Head of School, so did the number of those working alongside me who shared this belief and commitment. To them, I offer my deepest gratitude and appreciation. Your dedication, professionalism, creativity, and care for each other are a daily inspiration for me and for our girls.”
