August 11 – 15 was another busy week at Macedonia Baptist Church in Heathsville. Twenty-seven young men from around the Northern Neck were busy learning new things at Camp S.W.A.G. (Success While Achieving Godliness). The camp directors Rev. Kevin Elmore and Mr. Bill Hines involved the young men in exciting hands on learning activities, group discussions and much more. The goal of the camp is to instill essential life skills, expose them to life’s possibilities and empower them with Godly principles stated Rev. Kenneth Rioland, pastor of Macedonia Baptist Church. He continues, these young men are great kids, many just need more positive male role models in their lives and we are here to do just that.

The young men had sessions on public speaking, the importance of giving back, health and hygiene, discipline, citizenship, boy/girl relationships, physical fitness, team building and much more. They participated in a community service project partnering with the Boys and Girls Club to build the next Habitat for Humanity house in Lancaster County. Rev. Elmore said he was very proud of the boys that day as they really got involved in the construction of the Habitat house and picked up some new skills as well. They received a real workout at Abilities Abound Physical Therapy and Wellness Center in Callao as Jamie Veney, the wellness director at the center took them thru an exercise and fitness regiment that really got them moving. On Education Day the guys traveled to Hampton University and the Apprentice School operated by Newport News Shipbuilding. Education Day opened the eyes of many of the young men to the possibilities available to them stated Mr. Hines.

The final day of camp the boys went to Washington, DC for a little fun at the Washington Nationals Baseball Game. This too was a first for many of them. The week ended just as it begun with much fun and excitement and many of the guys looking forward to the other events planned for the rest of this year.

Macedonia Baptist Church and the Macedonia Community Development Corporation would like to thank all of the people who help make Camp S.W.A.G. 2014 a success. Without the generous financial support from our partners, donors and friends, this camp would not have happen stated Pastor Rioland.
