District 15 Big League All-Stars Team takes 3rd place in states
The District 15 Big League All-Stars Team
On July 5, 12 members of the District 15 Big League team traveled to Norton, VA to participate in the state tournament held at Union High School in Big Stone Gap. This was after the team had completed a grueling 12 game schedule in 24 days, traveling to Richmond and Dumfries in order to qualify for state competition. The team is composed of players, ages 16 -18, from Essex, Northumberland, Richmond and Westmoreland counties.
In its first game, the team dropped a tough 5-4 extra inning decision to District 11, Lebanon, on Sunday. Coming back Monday morning, District 15 trounced District 5 rival, Tuckahoe, 22-3 in 5 innings. Later that afternoon the team eliminated the host team, District 11, Pound 11-5. On Tuesday morning District 15 avenged its earlier loss with a 6-1 victory over Lebanon. Having to play immediately after their morning win, the team ran out of steam and were eliminated by the eventual state runner-up, District 10, Fairfax 14-1.
After dropping its’ first game of the tournament the District 15 team managed to fight its’ way through the loser’s bracket for a third place finish in State competition. It should be noted these young men well represented our area with sportsmanship and class, on and off the field, as noted by the numerous compliments from opposing teams and tournament officials.
A big thank you to supporters from the team
The District 15 Big League All-Star team gratefully acknowledges the generous contributions of the following businesses and individuals who made possible our recent journey to Southwest Virginia to participate in the State tournament.
