Lois Mullins Layne, age 88, passed on Thursday, July 24, 2014, at her daughter’s home. Mrs. Layne was born and raised in Dickenson County, VA to the late James Russell Mullins and Dephia Ratliffe Mullins. Lois lived in Manassas, VA and Warsaw, VA for many years and moved to Abingdon, VA in 2002. She and her husband held nursing home ministries in both Warsaw and the Abingdon areas and assisted with the Campside Evangelism Program while living in Warsaw. Lois was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Bristol, VA.
In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Gail Layne Bennett; brothers, Houston, Haskell, Chester, and Ulis Mullins; sisters, Eunice Patton and Lena Mullins.
She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Rutherford Layne of Kingsport, TN; daughter, Judy Shepherd and husband Bob of Kingsport, TN; brother, Roscoe Mullins of Clintwood, VA; sister, Norma Robinson of Clintwood, VA; sister-in-law, Lucille Mullins of Clintwood, VA; three grandchildren, Bobby Shepherd, Allen King, and Andrew Shepherd; 10 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
Funeral services was held at 2 p.m., Sunday, July 27, 2014, at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service, 19415 Lee Highway, Abingdon, VA 24210, with Pastor Brad Davis and Bro. Bob Steele officiating. Interment followed in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Danny Robinson, Roderick Mullins, Sylvan Mullins, George Hilton, Lamont Orndorff, and Josh Davis serving as pallbearers.
Visitation with the family was held 6-8 p.m. Saturday at the Forest Hills Chapel of Farris Funeral Service.

William Franklin Meeks (Peanut), 47, of Front Royal VA passed away at Blue Ridge Hospice Inpatient Care Center in Winchester, VA on Tues. July 15, 2014 after battling cancer.
He is survived by his mother, Annie Ruth Summerlin Ulfig of Warsaw, VA, his stepfather, Ed Ulfig of Montross, VA, his daughter, Brittany Meeks of Montross, brothers Henry Graham Meeks Jr. and wife Debbie of Ohio and Jay Lee Eubanks of FL and a sister, Eunice Diana Davis of Warsaw, VA. He is also survived by nieces Michaela and Shelby Meeks of NC and nephews Kai Meeks of NC and Wayne Davis of Warsaw, VA.
He was born on Oct. 17, 1966.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Nicole Meeks, his father, Henry Meeks Sr., and his grandparents.
A graveside service will be held on Sat. Aug. 9, 4 p.m. at 63 St. James Lane and South Tidwells Rd. in Montross.
Thomas O. Lewis, 87, of Kinsale, passed away Friday, July 18, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer’s. He was a retired mechanic and self-employed truck driver.
He is survived by his wife, Ann K. Lewis; children, Carolyn Martin (Robert), Tommy Lewis Jr. (Kathy), Linda Lewis (Clay), Sherry Yeatman (Michael) and Bill Lewis (Missy); seven grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
A private service will be held in Lottsburg, Va. The family would like to thank the entire staff at Ashland Nursing & Rehab for the care he received the last five and a half years.
Morgan Bertrand Gordon, 90, of Warsaw, passed away Saturday, July 19, 2014. Mr. Gordon was a retired truck driver who worked for Whitehurst for 40 years. His hobbies were to fish and dance. He was the widower of Stella Lee Gordon.
He is survived by his sons, Glenwood Gordon (Mary Gail), James Gordon (Linda), Benny Gordon (Kathy Marie), Wayne “Mickey” Gordon (Cathy) and Jerry Gordon (Shirley); daughters, Anna Lee Cook (Irving Eugene) and Sadie Mae Gordon; 14 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
A funeral service was held Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at Welch Funeral Home – Marks Chapel with Pastor Wade Wilkins officiating. Memorial contributions may be made to Lancashire Convalescent & Rehabilitation Center, 287 School Street, Kilmarnock, VA 22482.
Betty Jane Brown, 76, of Warsaw, passed away Monday, July 21, 2014. She was the widow of Milton Brown Sr. and a retiree of Levi Strauss.
Survivors are her son, Milton B. Brown Jr. of Warsaw; her daughter, Lisa Bateman of Tappahannock; grandson, Harry Spencer Bullis V; and three great-grandchildren, Jessica Bullis, Ethan Spencer Bullis and Faith Ann Bullis.
Funeral services were held Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Welch Funeral Home- Marks Chapel with interment in Cobham Park Cemetery. Pastor Donald Bowen officiated.
Mary Edna Leggett, 99, of Warsaw, passed away Tuesday, July 15, 2014.
She is survived by her daughter, Christian L. Parsons of England; brother, Brett J. Richardson; sister, Macy R. Scott; grandson, Christopher Parsons of England, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is predeceased by her parents, Foster and Iola Richardson; husband, Paul Leggett; brothers, Foster C. Richardson Jr. and Roy F. Richardson; and sister, Betty R. Mitchell.
A graveside services was held Saturday, July 19, 2014 at Pinelawn Memorial Park in Southern Pines, NC.
Catherine Liner Womac, 86, of Warsaw, Virginia, passed away on Saturday July 26, 2014. She was a retired seamstress and CNA; and also a member of Oakland United Methodist Church, Farnham, Virginia.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Eugene O. Womac; four brothers, two sisters, and one grandson.
She is survived by her daughters, Joy Cowell, of Emmerton, Virginia, Helen W. Burgess and her husband C.C., of Rainswood, Virginia, and Connie W. Maslock and her husband Gary, of Emmerton, Virginia; one sister, Margaret L. Crook, of Tennessee; seven grandchildren, Kim C. Elbourne, Cathy C. Queen, Jennifer B. Thomas, Rebekah B. Crowther, Chad R. McGrath, David E. Faraone, and Susan M. Vafiadis; thirteen great grandchildren, Seth Elbourne, Megan Elbourne, Ethan Elbourne, Morgan Thomas, Graham Thomas, Wesley Thomas, May Crowther, Cody Sanders, Jesse Sanders, Hannah Queen, Josie Queen, Nicholas Vafiadis, and Isabelle Vafiadis.
The family will receive friends on Friday, August 1, 2014 from 10-11 a.m. at Oakland United Methodist Church, Farnham, Virginia. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be private at a later date.

Marie D. Swann, 87, of Heathsville, Virginia, passed away Monday, July 21, 2014.
She was a member of Smithland Baptist Church, Heathsville, Virginia, and retired after 35 years of teaching from the Northumberland County School System.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Calvin E. Swann.
She is survived by her daughter, Janice S. Wille, and her husband Kevin of Keezletown, Virginia; son, Gene Swann and his wife, Cheryl of Heathsville, Virginia; three grandchildren, Niki Swann, Ryan G. Swann, and his girlfriend, Elise Madison, and Kaitlyn Wille; great grand daughter, Bella-Sophia Marie Swann.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, July 26, from 10-11:00 a.m. at Smithland Baptist Church, Heathsville, Virginia. The Funeral Service will follow at 11:00 a.m. Burial will be at Smithland Baptist Church.

Vera S. Moore, 78, of Sampson’s Wharf, Virginia, passed away on July 21, 2014. She retired as a CNA in Elderly Care, and was a member of Coan Baptist Church, Heathsville, Virginia. She also was a member of the Daughters of America Revolution, and loved following the grandchildren and great grandchildren in anything they did.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Gorman Hugh Moore.
She is survived by her son, Gregg H. Moore and his wife Diane of Fairfax; daughters, Deborah A. Lamb of the Northern Neck, Bonnie E. Spitler and her husband Ray, of Linville, Virginia, Valerie Y. Keyser of Manasses, Virginia, and Melanie V. Moore of Woodbridge, Virginia; six brothers, Roger Mullins, Larry Mullins, Jasper Mullins, Glen Mac Mullins, Ronnie Mullins, and Steve Mullins; one sister, Elaine Maxwell; fifteen grandchildren, and 19 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, July 24, 2014 at Bay Cremation at Jones-Ash Funeral Home, Heathsville, Virginia, from 7-8:30 pm. A funeral service will be held on Friday, July 25, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home. Burial will be at Sampson’s Wharf Cemetery.

Burnet Alan Beswick, 60, passed away July 26, 2014. After graduation from West Point High School in 1971 he earned a degree from RCC in business management and an associate’s degree in applied science. He retired from Verizon telephone, and was a member of West Point United Methodist Church.
Alan may have been most well-known for his work with the West Point High School football team, which he began in 1967 and continued through 2013, receiving the Virginia High School League Region A Award of Merit in 2008.
He was predeceased by his father, William R. Beswick and is survived by his mother, Josephine Beswick; two sisters, Sandra Urban (Rod) of Bradenton, Fla. and Vicki Blake (Ernie) of Topping; nieces and nephews, Christy Bruce, Meredith Kuebler, Matthew Urban and Michael Blake; great-nieces and –nephews, William, Hailey, Chase, Brayden, Brock and Charlotte; and several uncles, aunts and cousins. Graveside service 11 a.m. Wednesday, July 30, at Sunny Slope Cemetery, West Point.
