Richmond author, Virginia Pye, stopped by the Historic Beale Building in Tappahannock on Friday May 2nd to discuss her new book, River of Dust. The discussion is part of an ongoing meet the author series. To avoid giving away too many details Pye discussed a broad outline of the book but primarily focused on her grandfather, the Reverend Watts O. Pye, whom she used as inspiration for River of Dust.
Virginia Pye emphasized during her discussion that she chose to write River of Dust as fiction, because as she emphasized, after some feedback on her original draft she decided to refocus the story on a fictionalized Christian missionary in rural China whose child is abducted by Mongol bandits and his subsequent adventures traveling through a treacherous land of beheadings and opium dens to get his child back. All the while, his still pregnant wife gives birth while she is holed up in the mission compound.
While searching for his young son, he eventually garners the nickname…
