Essex County could soon be bidding farewell to the long-standing non-profit Tappahannock Volunteer Rescue Squad as a standalone organization.
The board of supervisors is considering a merger that would later this year combine the volunteer agency and Essex County Emergency Medical Services (EMS) into one EMS agency serving all Essex County citizens.
County Administrator Reese Peck indicated that the Tappahannock rescue squad was part of a nationwide trend of volunteer first responder agencies struggling to maintain their operations due to the impact of the recession and a general decline in the total number of volunteers.
