Letters to the editor: Week of Feb. 19

The end of an era

Dear Citizens, Colleagues and Community Partners,
As my work as Director of Social Services for Richmond County comes to an end, I would like to thank you for your encouragement, support, counsel and friendship over the last  seven and a half years. I consider the opportunity to have served the citizens of Richmond County an honor and a privilege.
During the past seven and a half years, I have devoted my time and energy to one key objective: ensuring the health, safety and well-being of the citizens of Richmond County while serving with the highest degree of professionalism, integrity and courtesy.
The support of staff and encouragement of the Board of Directors enabled Richmond County DSS to be recognized across the Commonwealth as an innovative and forward thinking human services agency. This standing was recognized by Secretary of Health and Human Resources, William ”Bill” Hazel by holding a Town Hall meeting here in the county; Richmond County DSS being selected to participate in the Virginia Supreme Court’s Court Improvement Program, representing the 15th Court District; Richmond County DSS being chosen by the Virginia Department of Social Services Strengthening Families Initiative to participate in the Annie E. Casey Strengthening Families Initiative resulting in a $20,000 grant; and, a $25,000 Safety Net grant from the Jessie Ball DuPont Foundation. In addition, Richmond County DSS was tapped to be the voice of Level I agencies across the Commonwealth for the Organizational Change Management Eligibility Modernization Workgroup. The workgroup was responsible for coordinating the systems processes and training program for the overhaul of the Commonwealth’s IT infrastructure for processing Medicaid applications, which was directly impacted by the Affordable Care Act.
Many of you have visited the agency in the past two years and know that we have expanded our facility to adequately meet the service needs of the citizens of Richmond County. If you have not visited, please consider doing so in the near future.
I am looking forward to life’s next chapter. Regardless of where I go or what I do, I will hold this time and these memories in very high esteem.  I have met many constituents and made many  friends. Here’s wishing all of you well!
Again, thank you for the privilege and opportunity to serve as your Director of Social Services.

Claudette Carter Henderson, M.S.
