Man with firearm arrested near school property in Lancaster, Va.

Earlier today deputies and Kilmarnock police responded to a man with a gun call on School Street. The initial report was that a man and a woman were arguing in front of the Kilmarnock Volunteer Fire Department.
When deputies arrived they found Keonta J. Smith, 21 of the 300 block of Lumberlost Trail, Weems, at the gate entrance in front of the Lancaster Middle School. Deputies reported seeing Smith with a holstered pistol in plain view, and immediately took control of both Smith and the firearm without incident. Deputies advised that at no time was there any attempt to enter the school building.
Smith was charged with felony possession of a firearm on school property, and was ordered held without bond pending arraignment on January 21. The pistol was seized as evidence and secured at the Lancaster Sheriff’s Office.
