The Trojans ended the season with a record of 13-2 after being dropped in the state finals to Altavista, 21-0. Coaches and players carried one another following Saturday’s game.

But to be shut out by second seeded Altavista, 21-0, in the Group 1A final on Saturday was not something fans had not imagined.
Last Saturday, the Trojans’ hopes of earning the school’s second state championship ended under the rain, hail and snow that peppered the Salem City Stadium.
It was painful for the fans to watch their prolific Trojans getting scored upon and failing to convert drives into scores.
Essex shut out teams in four games this season, but this was the first time in 2013 when they were on the other end of the result.
Three all conference football players went down for the Trojans’ offense and never came back under the bad weather.
