Essex puts down Dukes
The Essex Trojans proved on paper and to fans that the first round of the football
playoffs would be quick. But maybe not as fast as they thought as they won 56-0 over the visiting 16th seeded team from Cumberland.
The Trojans scored on the ground and in the air, and they did so with major help.
“I think our guys played up to their potential in the first half and hopefully everyone is healthy. They’ll be over the win by Monday and get ready for their next opponent next week,” Essex Head Coach John Fulks said.
Coach complimented the defense led by defending all-state junior defensive back Sterling Hammond.
“We just have to stay humble because we don’t have the ring yet. Its just motivation,” Hammond said. “We’ll just prepare hard this week because every game is a big one now.”
Essex will host Parry McCluer on Nov. 22. Kick off is at 7 p.m. McCluer defeated West Point 42-28 in the first round of the eastern sectional playoffs.
After the first quarter of play on Friday, Essex forced the coaches to change the quarters from 12 minutes to eight following an early 42-0 lead in the game.
