There is a plague spreading across the region. It has infected neighbors, friends, students and respected business owners without prejudice.
It is an outbreak of addiction, started with an easily made over-the-counter purchase of the new and destructive designer drug called Spice that has left area law enforcement officials in a life and death struggle to eradicate.
“We first became aware of the problem at our schools,” said Northumberland County Sheriff Chuck Wilkins. “We had several people going in to emergency physicians and at first we thought it was a Swine Flu outbreak.”
Doctors were baffled when virus tests came back negative.
“We had weight loss, mood changes, loss in grades, rages and then a couple of parents whispered in our ears about performing drug tests and even they came back clean so the ER didn’t have an answer for it,” Wilkins said.
