Compared to the exciting offense the Rappahannock High Football Team is displaying, coach William West is keeping his demeanor to a minimum with the success.

While spectators and fans are raving about the team since it improved to 5-0 this past weekend, West is keeping the team humble and focused on the next opponent.

“Winning the next game. That’s the only thing I’m thinking about,” West said.

On the road at Mathews, Rappahannock improved to 5-0 after defeating the Blue Devils, 54-13.

Quarterback Ken Pierson was 9-15 on passing attempts for a total of 221 yards and four touchdowns. Pierson also threw his first career interception against the Blue Devils.

Marcus Byrd led the team receiving with four touchdown receptions for 145 yards. Marquise Lanier followed with two receptions for 39 yards and Jamal Fisher with three receptions for 39 yards.

Tevin Fisher also had a reception for 26 yards thrown by Byrd.

On the ground Jaquan Thompson led all rushers with 15 carries for 72 yards. Pierson followed with five carries for seven yards, Jamal Fisher a carry nine yards, Romeo Jackson had three carries for one yard, Andre Brown had a carry for four yards and Fisher had three carries for 36 yards.

Coach West said he had confidence in his skill-players before returning this season. He added that the team’s success all depended on how the offensive line performed and the coaches finding someone special to lead at the quarterback position.

“We coach the kids that we have in the school system and they make you look good. Right now with us scoring several points a game they make us look we’re doing something special and I pray we keep continuing to do that,” West said.

Rappahannock will host Colonial Beach this Friday to cap off their homecoming week festivities. Colonial Beach is coming off a 62-8 win over Charles City last week improving to 2-3.

Kick-off on Oct. 11 at 7 p.m.
