Inasmuch returns to Northern Neck, Sept. 28

inasmuchOn Saturday, September 28, hundreds of local Operation Inasmuch volunteers wearing conspicuous red shirts will once again be working throughout the Northern Neck as part of the fourth annual Inasmuch United Northern Neck event.  The Kickoff will be held at 7:30 a.m. on the lawn of Rappahannock Community College in Warsaw.  At 8:00 AM, volunteers from three counties representing over twenty churches and several local organizations will begin work on numerous projects in the community to help neighbors in need.

Operation Inasmuch encourages churches to break out of their comfort zones and join with members of other churches and denominations to answer the biblical call to serve others together as the Body of Christ.  Their name comes from Matthew 25:40, in which Jesus teaches that “Inasmuch as you did it to one of the least of these my brethren, you did it to me.”  Operation Inasmuch seeks to reaffirm this kind of service as a central mission of the church.

The story of Operation Inasmuch began in 1995 with a single congregation in Fayetteville, NC.  Members of Snyder Memorial Baptist Church decided to set aside a day on which they would take on as many community service projects as possible to help the less fortunate in their local community.  Soon other churches began to join them, and eventually churches in other communities became interested in holding similar events.  The members of Snyder Memorial realized that they needed to form an organization to help these churches follow their example, and out of this the national movement Operation Inasmuch (www.operationinasmuch.org) was born.  Now local communities across the country sponsor their own Operation Inasmuch events as part of this Compassion Revolution.  Inasmuch United Northern Neck held its first Inasmuch United event in September 2010, covering Richmond and Westmoreland Counties.  They quickly grew to include Northumberland County as well.

Volunteers of all ages will be participating in a variety of projects.  Construction teams will build wheelchair ramps, repair roofs, and perform a variety of other indoor and outdoor home repairs.  Other teams will be painting, cutting and delivering firewood, doing yard work, and gleaning crops from local farms to help area food banks.  Finally, there will be teams devoted to visiting nursing homes and the home-bound, making and delivering prayer shawls and homemade cards, and a variety of related projects.

They will also hold their fourth annual Free Yard Sale on Saturday, September 28, from 8 a.m. to 3  p.m.  This year it will be located at the former Source Mall building in the Times Square Shopping Center in Warsaw.  This is like a regular yard sale except that everything is free!  Guests will be able to take home a limited number of free items including clothing, toys, kitchen items, books, and small appliances.
