Stars come out to play

Gloucester’s 12U Baseball Team and Mathews 12U Softball Team took home the prized gold division trophies in the Stars of Tomorrow Tournament this past weekend in Kilmarnock.
The three-day tournament, which began on Thursday, featured a number of softball and baseball teams from around the Northern Neck and Middle Peninsula.
The visiting 12U Gloucester Baseball Team took home the gold division trophy after defeating the home team Lancaster, 4-3, on the final day of competition. Westmoreland took home the silver division trophy after a 10-8 win over Essex, likewise Northumberland went home with the orange division trophy winning over Middle Peninsula, 13-7.
The championship games after eight teams were entered into the tournament including Mathews and Denbigh, who were both eliminated.
Mathews defeated Northumberland in the 12U Gold Division Championship after shutting them out 6-0. Then in the silver division, it was the home team Lancaster winning over Denbigh, 6-2.
The four teams each played three games over a two-day period ending in a three-way tie for first place. Mathews was awarded the top seed in the title game after allowing the least number of runs with four between Lancaster (won 2-1), Denbigh and (won 10-0) and Northumberland (lost 3-2). Northumberland allowed 12 runs in three games and Lancaster, 15.
Denbigh 8U Baseball picked up the top trophy followed by Lancaster 7U team taking second. The 12U Lancaster Softball and Denbigh Baseball Teams took home the sportsmanship trophies.
