Five Little League Softball Teams traveled from across the state to Tappahannock in a quest to earn the 9-10 Softball State Championship title and bid to the regional Little League Tournament in Georgia.

While it was a competitive atmosphere among the teams, it was also a time for the Essex County Little League to bask in the joy of hosting a state playoff tournament.

The Essex County Little League, a member of the Virginia Little League District 15 organization, hosted the Little League State 10-11 Softball Tournament in Tappahannock this past week. The tournament ended on July 23 and opened with a picnic held for the visiting teams, parents, volunteers and officials. Co-coordinator Niki Davis was excited about the opportunity to represent District 15 and their hometown.

“The board talked about it, saw it as a way to get our name out there and make a little money for the concession stand,” Davis said.

Essex Little League President Barbara Chastain said coordinators, volunteers and sponsors all did a great job.

“There was a lot of nerves because we were new at hosting a tournament and we didn’t know what to expect,” Chastain said.

Davis reached out to co-coordinator Dwayne Davis for his assistance with the fields. He and the league officials said this could not have been possible without the sponsors and volunteers. Sponsors also helped send the Essex 9-10 Baseball All-Stars to Tuckahoe.

“There were so many people that stepped up there and even the kids,” Davis said. “I was expecting a good turnout, but not as good as tonight [the picnic].”

On July 23, District 15 and Essex County Little League congratulated Luray on winning the state championship over Richlands, 10-7.

State title efforts end for Essex All-Stars

The District 15 champions from Essex were unable to move past pool play in the Virginia Little League 9-10 Baseball State Tournament. In Tuckahoe, Essex fell in Pool A to the likes of Southwestern Youth Association East, McLean American and Danville National.

On July 18, Essex fell to SYA 10-0 and in the days to follow would be dropped by McLean American, 14-3, and Danville National 14-11.

The championship will be played on July 22 between the remaining teams of SYA East, McLean American, West Springfield and Mechanicsville National.
