Virginia District 15 and the Essex County Little League organizations will have a shot at putting their best foot forward hosting the 10-11 State Softball Tournament in Tappahannock.

This comes after an intense few weeks of Little League district tournaments to open the summer.

Last year, visitors to the area were impressed with the sights and warm welcomes when the Northumberland Little League organization, a member of District 15, hosted a state tournament. Essex President Barbara Chastain is looking forward to the opportunity this week to welcome guests to her hometown.

“We are exciting about hosting this tournament.  It is a smaller event, however it gives us the opportunity to gain insight and begin hosting more in the future,” Chastain said.

The tournament will be made up of five district champions including Richlands (D-11), Luray (D-3), Green Run (D-8), McLean (D-4) and Clintwood (D-13). Games will begin on July 19 at 1183 Marsh Street in Tappahannock following a picnic at the Beale Memorial Baptist Church, Chastain said, adding that the tournament is expected to last until July 23.

Chastain said the decision to host the tournament came following a conversation with John Mitchell, the District 15 Administrator.

“We haven’t been in a position to host one in several years and this one would give us an opportunity to get back into action to host one so we decided to take it,” Chastain said.

The president wished to thank Beale for donating their site for the picnic, and Lowes and Southern States for helping to sponsor the tournament.  A representative of Lowes is expected to throw out the first pitch.

In game one, Green Run and Richlands will face off to start the tournament on July 19 at 10 a.m., followed by Clintwood and McLean in game two at 12 p.m. The winner of game one will play Luray the next day at 10 a.m. The winning teams of games one and three will meet July 21 at 10 a.m. for a shot in the finals.

In the elimination bracket, the losing teams of games two and one will play for a shot to advance and avoid a trip home. The winning team will play in game six against the losing team of game three on July 21 at 12 p.m. The winning team will advance to play the losing team of game five on July 22 at 10 a.m. for a shot in the state finals.

The finals will be held on July 23 at 10 a.m. A second game will be played should the finalists from the elimination bracket wins.
