Richmond County teams fall in playoffs
More District 15 champs in the hunt
Several Virginia Little League District 15 Champions were crowned shortly after Independence Day weekend. In the weeks to follow local teams from Essex, Westmoreland and Richmond Counties have been preparing and competing for their respective state championships across the Commonwealth.
Major Softball: Richmond County in Leesburg
Champions from Virginia District 15 move on to compete against other district representatives from across the Commonwealth.
Leesburg opened the Virginia Little League Major Softball State Tournament. Included in the list of the 14 teams is this year’s District 15 Champions from Richmond County.
In a battle for the state championship, Richmond County came up shy after finishing second in their pool play and falling in the single elimination tournament.
On July 12, Richmond County dropped their first game to McLean, 4-2, but rebounded back to defeat Warwick, 13-2, the next day.
With the 1-1 record in Pool C, Richmond County advanced to the next round to face the winner of Pool B and District 3 champion Broadway; it was in this game Richmond County would be eliminated after a 11-7 loss. Winners advanced to the semifinals on July 16. The finals will be played on Casciano Field July 17 at 6:30 p.m. Those still in the hunt for a championship are Saltville (D-1), Broadway (D-3), McLean (D-4) and Loudoun Girls (D-16).
Senior Softball: Richmond County in Honaker
The Virginia District 15 Senior Softball Champions from Richmond County opened the state tournament last week with huge win. But was eliminated from the tournament to place third in the state behind soon-to-be champion Honaker.
On July 12, Richmond County won with decisive win over District 3 Champion Clarke County, 10-0. This put them into the next round against Central Accomack the next day only to fall 11-4.
Richmond County fought their way in the elimination bracket to defeat Northamption, 16-0, Clarke County, 3-1 before falling again to Central Accomack 3-1.
Honaker went on to defeat Central Accomack 9-1 in the finals.
9-10 Softball: Richmond County in Lebanon
Richmond County will begin pool play on July 19 in Lebanon. The top two teams in each of the four pools advance to the next round of the 9-10 Little League State Softball Tournament.
On July 20 at 9 a.m., Richmond County will play Warwick, the District 7 Champions. Then the next day, play Gate City at 4:30 p.m.
Should Richmond be one of the top two teams to finish in pool three, they will play on July 22 in single elimination. If they are the top place pool finisher, they will play on July 22 at 3 p.m. and advance to the next round on July 23 at 11:30 a.m. if they should win.
If Richmond County should finish runners up in pool play, they will play on July 22 at 12:30 p.m. and advance to the next round on July 23 at 9 a.m. if they should win.
The state championship game will be on July 23 at 4 p.m.
9-10 Baseball: Essex in Tuckahoe
Tuckahoe will host the Virginia Little League 9-10 Baseball State Tournament. Included in the list of the 16 teams is this year’s District 15 Champions from Essex.
Essex will compete in Pool A against champions from 2, 4 and 10. In order for Essex to advance to the next round, they must finish among the top two teams in Pool A. Essex will play the following schedule of games: District 10 at noon on July 18 (Field 5), District 4 at 9:30 a.m. on July 19 (Field 6) and District 2 at 9:30 a.m. on July 20.
Should Essex be one of the top two teams to finish in pool A, they will play on July 21 at 1 p.m.in single elimination playoffs tournament. If they are the top place pool finisher, they will play on field five; field six if they are the runners up.
If Richmond County should win, they will return for the semifinals round starting at 7 p.m., winners advance to the championship on July 22 at 10 a.m.
