Rollers head to Chincoteague, June 19
Fairfields United Methodist Church in Burgess to Host Holy Rollers and To-Be-Rollers- The Holy Rollers is a group of United Methodist Clergy and Lay People from every corner of Virginia who share a passionate love for the Lord Jesus, a deep concern for dispossessed and marginalized people, and the inexplicable joy of riding bicycles long distances. This year’s 10th annual ride will begin in Chincoteague on Wednesday, June 19. The group will bicycle 220 miles to Hampton in three days! The trip includes an overnight stay on Tangier Island. There will also be shorter rides (25, 50, 80, and 100 miles). Fairfields United Methodist Church in Burgess will provide a rest stop for the group on Thursday, June 20th at 8:30 a.m. in the Church’s Activities Building. The community is invited to this event to meet members of the group. In 2003 during Annual Conference the Bishop announced that the Annual Conference offering was going to fall well short of its goal. That’s when the Reverend Edward Hopkins had an idea: could clergy and lay people get together, train, raise money, and ride bicycles to the Virginia Annual Conference? The Holy Rollers were born! This ride promised to fulfill a THREE-FOLD PURPOSE:
• Fund Raising—To raise money for and awareness of the Virginia Annual Conference Offering
• Fellowship Building—To encourage fellowship and to build Christian collegiality among clergy and laity through cycling
• Fitness Encouragement—To offer Holy opportunities for clergy and laity to increase their fitness and well-being. All level riders are welcomed! Registration Fee: $85 (includes food, snacks, and transportation). Write the check to Ray Sterns, 111 Kent Taylor Dr. Yorktown, Va. 23693 by June 1st.
